Description - Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco

Seventeen-year-old Audrey Rose Wadsworth was born a lord's daughter, with a life of wealth and privilege stretched out before her. But between the social teas and silk dress fittings, she leads a forbidden secret life.

Against her stern father's wishes and society's expectations, Audrey often slips away to her uncle's laboratory to study the gruesome practice of forensic medicine. When her work on a string of savagely killed corpses drags Audrey into the investigation of a serial murderer, her search for answers brings her close to her own sheltered world.

The story's shocking twists and turns, augmented with real, sinister period photos, will make this dazzling debut from author Kerri Maniscalco impossible to forget.

Book Review: Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco - Reviewed by (31 Mar 2020)

I wasn't sure if this was going to be a book I would take to as I picked it up far later than most others and when the hype was very strong. I tried it as an audio book first which I usually love, however it just wasn't working for me so picked up the physical copy. I wasn't sure who 'The Ripper' was until about mid-way through the book when the clues pointed towards one specific person. The back of the book also gives away a major clue by saying the protagonist loves 'The Ripper', which I think is a shame. I initially went back and forth about who it might be, so I think an author who can throw in red herrings to make the reader doubt their thoughts is a great skill and Kerri Maniscalco did this quite well, especially within the first half of the novel. The book could be a little gore-filled at times so if you have a sensitive disposition you may want to skip over these parts, however I must say I have read far worse so she did tame it down a little to fit it into the YA category. I didn't really buy into the romance in this first book, but I'm hoping it'll grow on me further into the series, as many people adore the couple. I also didn't connect with the main character like I usually like to, and the plot felt a little inconsistent at times along with the pacing, however I still enjoyed it and liked the unique take on the 'Jack the Ripper' story.

Author Biography - Kerri Maniscalco

Kerri Maniscalco grew up in a semi-haunted house outside New York City, where her fascination with gothic settings began. In her spare time she reads everything she can get her hands on, cooks all kinds of food with her family and friends, and drinks entirely too much tea while discussing life's finer points with her cats. Stalking Jack the Ripper is her debut novel. It incorporates her love of forensic science and unsolved history.
